TODAY'S SUMMARY
Trouble brewing over bankers' bonuses
21 December 2010
Rachel Sylvester in the Timessuggests that discord in the coalition government may turn into public infighting over the issue of bankers' bonuses: George Osborne wants to reassure the "global financial elite" that Britain welcomes them, while Vince Cable wants details of all bonuses exceeding £1m made public. Delays and cancelled flights at Heathrow airport expose a system of regulation which has completely failed to maintain the smooth operation of Britain's privately run infrastructure, writes Philip Stephens in the Financial Times. In the Independent, Steve Richards calls for caution from the government, arguing that the Conservatives should slow the pace of their reform agenda. George Monbiot of the Guardian writes that the cold snap might actually be linked to global warming, citing evidence which links warm spells in the Arctic to cold winters in Europe. Finally, Hugo Rifkind in the Times argues that our ever-increasing access to information has made us impatient. Convinced that being informed is the same as being in control, we are unwilling to wait for anything.
