Yesterday, coal miner Peabody Energy Corp. (NYSE:BTU)  initiated a new issue of senior notes and also announced the redemption of notes previously issued.
In the new offer, Peabody priced the issue of 6.5% senior notes due 2020, aggregating to $650 million, under its shelf registration statement. Further, it announced the redemption of its outstanding 6 7/8% senior notes due 2013.

Legg Mason Inc. (NYSE:LM) reported preliminary month-end assets under management (AUM) of $659.3 billion for the month of July, up 2.0% from $645.4 billion at the end of the prior month having declined marginally in June from May. CIT Refinances $3B Costly Debt

In an effort to make itself more flexible with respect to financial support, business lender CIT Group Inc. (NYSE:CIT) refinanced $3 billion of its first lien debt. The company also prepaid about $1 billion of the debt with available corporate cash.

Initial Claims for Unemployment Insurance edged up by 2,000 last week to 484,000. The four-week moving average increased by 14,250 to 473,500. Both are at the high end of the “trading range” that they have been in since the start of the year, which followed a steep drop in the last half of 2009.
