ERCI Watch: Further Slight Improvement, But Tread Carefully

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 02:58 AM PDT

The ECRI Weekly Indicator for the week ended August 6 came in at 122.4 compared to the previous week's 121.7. The closely-watched ECRI WLI Smoothed Annualised Growth Rate came in at -9.8% compared to the -10.3% of the previous week. That compares to our forecast of "unchanged/slight improvement".
The marginally improved growth rate can largely be attributed to the improvement of the S&P 500 growth rate from -0.7% to 2.4%.

Technical Talk: Any Bounce To Be Short-lived

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 02:53 AM PDT

The comments below were provided by Kevin Lane of Fusion IQ.
As seen in the chart below, the S&P 500 is now down 4.25% after violating its uptrend line (green line). The sell-off has been on low volume, commensurate with the summer malaise. Given the short, quick sell-off we would expect some counter-trend rally to develop here for a few days. However, given the larger macro issues and the backdrop of September/October looming we expect any bounce to be short-lived and revert lower in … [visit site to read more]

SA Economic Drag Anchors Fully Deployed

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 02:36 AM PDT

By Cees Bruggemans, Chief Economist of FNB.
Reportedly, the SARB may only consider cutting interest rates if growth takes a (decided) turn for the worse and inflation remains non-threatening, with downside risk.
Be careful what you wish for, yet much suggests confirmation on all scores.
Though SARB is forward-looking, the present usually counts for most.
It is in the present that much evidence keeps piling up in favour of a September rate cut, financial markets now for some 70% discounting this … [visit site to read more]

Posted: 17 Aug 2010 11:51 PM PDT

Commodities – Energy
Crude Oil Inventories in Focus
Crude Oil (WTI) - $75.55 // -$0.22 // -0.29%
Commentary: Crude oil rallied $0.53, or 0.70%, on Tuesday, breaking a five session losing streak. The advance, however, was quite tame relative to both last week's decline and the 1.2% rally in equity markets. The oil market may be finally be acknowledging that fact that supply remains abundant, with inventories in the U.S. at 10-year highs. If the API survey is any indication, the DOE report … [visit site to read more]

Stock Market Rallies Thanks To Housing News

The market held up again into the After Hours. Some market watchers are attributing the rally today on improved month-over-month Housing starts numbers, but remember that June was one of the lowest in over a year, so I would not put much emphasis on those results. If the market can break upside resistance of 1100 on the SPX, the bulls could have some steam to challenge the beginning of the month highs. One note, PPI data showed today that inflation is in check and that global deflation is … [visit site to read more]
