Elsewhere, in the Daily Mirror, Kevin Maguire argues that the coalition is using deficit reduction as a cover for extreme Thatcherism and warns that David Cameron is determined to rewind the welfare state. Meanwhile in the Financial Times, Tony Travers says that England may become more like the US, with a smaller state but more philanthropic and voluntary bodies. Writing in the Guardian, John Harris says that Tony Blair's planned donation to the Royal British Legion only highlights New Labour's toxic legacy. Finally, in the Times, Julian Baggini criticises the media for judging exams based on their difficulty, rather than on the degree to which they improve pupils' knowledge.
