‘The Most Perturbing Aspect Of The Current Slowdown Is That The Weakness Is So Widespread’

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:58 PM PDT

It’s not just crusty old skeptics like me who wonder about the growing disconnect between Wall Street and Main Street:
“Summertime Blues” (The Economist)
The slowdown is spreading around the world
NOT for the first time, the recent behaviour of financial markets has been at odds with economic fundamentals. The living has been easy on American and European stock exchanges this summer, despite plenty of gloomy data. Investors may have been placing too much faith in the capacity of central banks … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Mortgage Rates, Credit Card Rewards or Best Credit Cards

The Latest ETF Eye-Opener

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:40 PM PDT

A few years ago, we discussed the flow of money rushing into ETFs without careful analysis by investors about the unknown risks.
Institutional Investor recently highlighted another downside to these investments: ETFs' use of hypothetical, back-tested performance. To attract assets, some index providers have unique indexes based on various performance characteristics, weighting methodologies and valuation metrics. They then launch an ETF and tout the investment's theoretical performance.

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:23 PM PDT

Buried in this week's 213-page August Monthly Energy Review from the EIA (full report here) is the fact that U.S. crude oil production for the lower 48 states is estimated to have reached a 23-year high in July of 5.865 million barrels per day (see top chart above, data here).  If so, that would be the highest monthly production of crude oil in the lower 48 states in more than 23 years, since April of 1989 when 5.88 million daily barrels of oil were produced.  From January-July … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Mortgage Rates, Credit Card Rewards or Best Credit Cards

Great Moments In Government Regulation: Thou Shall Not Change Signs More Than Twice Per Day

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 01:03 PM PDT

1. Washington Post — “If the Church of the Good Shepherd in Vienna, VA wanted to post the Ten Commandments on its sign on Hunter Mill Road, it would take five days to broadcast them all. That's because Fairfax County has a commandment of its own: Thou shall not change electronic signs more than twice a day.”

“So, after the Vienna United Methodist church posted three messages one day last month — offering refuge from the heat, then promoting its Web site and finally listing the time of a … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Mortgage Rates, Credit Card Rewards or Best Credit Cards

Gold, Silver, Mining Stocks: Breakout Time, Not Bubble Time

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 12:04 PM PDT

The Chinese ideograph for crisis is represented by the sign for danger joined together with the symbol for opportunity.
Admittedly, for over a year and a half precious metals investors have been going through a time for testing of our essential position in wealth in the earth equities and bullion.  Investors were experiencing pain and panic at a time that it was easier to throw in the towel as the technical charts appeared to be broken as gold (GLD) and silver (SLV) went … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Mortgage Rates, Credit Card Rewards or Best Credit Cards

End Of Day Market Analysis

Posted: 27 Aug 2012 02:32 PM PDT

Overall today the price action was pretty boring in most cases. Besides AAPL and oil futures, we did not get any major price action in the broader indices worthy of discussing. In addition, volume overall on the session was one of the weakest in 2012 for a non-holiday week.
At the moment, I really like the defined risk we have in the S&P 500 Index. Today's highs will serve as a psychological level for the market overall. If prices start to drift lower I think the 1,380 … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Mortgage Rates, Credit Card Rewards or Best Credit Cards
