Cliffs Reopens WV Mine

Mining company, Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. (NYSE:CLF) restarted its operations at a West Virginia mine that was closed in May. The mine was shut down after elevated levels of carbon monoxide were detected. The operations resumed at the beginning of October.
The mine produces metallurgical coal used for making coke for iron and steel production. It produced 1.1 million tons and employed about 375 miners in the fiscal year 2010.

As expected the FTSE 100 index paused after reaching the retracement zone of the yearly range of 6105.80 to 4791.00. This zone is 5448.40 to 5603.55. As the market approached this area, traders were going to have to decide whether this retracement range would form resistance or would it act as a launching pad for further upside action. Based on the close at 5404.38 on Thursday, it appears that it would be resistance at this time.

Rally Not Confirmed By Volume

As stocks continued to rally into a resistance zone yesterday, the lack of confirmation from volume indicators suggest that resistance is likely to hold. The chart below of SPY shows that this October rally has been a low volume rally. In fact, volume has been so low that yesterday’s volume was barely above Monday’s Columbus Day semi-holiday volume.
