The economy added a total of just 54,000 jobs in May. That is much worse than consensus expectations for a gain of 169,000. And the expectations for the month were significantly higher than that prior to the ADP report on Wednesday, which was pretty much right on target with its 38,000 private sector jobs created.

ISM Services PMI Soothes Some Of The Sting From Weak NFP Report

Following on the heels of a very weak NFP report, we had the ISM services index register a better than expected reading. It may be able to take some of the sting out of the NFP report as services make up a bulk of the economy, and poor hiring in the service sector was a major reason for the disappointing payrolls figure.
The ISM Non-Manufacturing index rose to 54.6 compared to April's 53.7, and expectations of a 54.0 reading.
