Gold – Does Breaching Its 50 DMA Spell Gloom?

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 02:00 AM PST

I reported in a post on Wednesday that the gold price had breached trend-line support and its 50-day moving average and appeared set for more downside. A bearish "triple top" formation also looked ominous. The subsequent few days witnessed roller-coaster swings with gold yesterday trading between $1,378 and $1,353, but closing at $1,369 to remain below its 50 DMA ($1,381) for a third consecutive day.

The question that invariably comes to mind is what typically happens when the gold price … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Credit Cards and Best CD Rates

Yes, The U.S. Is Hiring But At A Snail’s Pace

Posted: 08 Jan 2011 01:50 AM PST

Nonfarm payroll employment [[jobs]] yesterday increased far less than expected, with a net gain of only 103,000 jobs. The household survey produced a more positive assessment of the labor market, with the unemployment rate declining by 0.4 percentage points to 9.4%. Although household employment increased by about 350,000, labor force participation fell as well.
For some perspective, a graph from Chart of the Day illustrates the percentage increase in the number of jobs for every decade since … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Credit Cards and Best CD Rates

Buffett Stomps S&P In 2010

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 11:05 PM PST

Shares of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (Class A) have finished 2010 with a 21.4% return, outperforming the benchmark S&P's 12.8%.

The win reverses Buffett's defeat in 2009, when the S&P's 23.5% return clobbered Berkshire's 2.7% number.
Berkshire has beaten the S&P in four of the past five years, and six of the past ten years. The full record is below.

Jim O’Neill: South Africa As A BRIC?

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 10:30 PM PST

Jim O'Neill, the chairman of Goldman Sachs Asset Management and creator of the 'BRIC' acronym, discusses why the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, and China are welcoming South Africa into their political club.
According to Bloomberg late last week, South Africa may be formally invited to join the annual meeting of the BRIC leaders in 2011. Many people are asking me about my views on this development. Here they are, briefly.

Bigger Than Unemployment Report: Today’s News That Really Mattered

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 09:07 PM PST

The latest unemployment figures were released today and the results – as has been the case for nearly three years – were disappointing.

The market was expecting gains of 160,000 jobs. The Department of Labor estimated actual gains of 103,000.

In addition, more than a half million Americans gave up looking for work. So they're no longer "unemployed." And the official unemployment rate fell from 9.8% to 9.4%.

After 20 months of unemployment above 9%, the reception of the news was … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Credit Cards and Best CD Rates

U.S. Stock Market & Gold Under Pressure: Is A Top In?

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 08:49 PM PST

With the holiday season in the rear view mirror and volume slowly creeping back into the marketplace, I can't help but wonder what lies ahead. The optimist in me is hopeful that the economy will continue to repair itself and the financial issues that plague the federal government, state government, and local governments will just go away as the economy rebounds. The only problem with my hope is that massive debts and deficits do not simply disappear and I fear the problem will be a long … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Credit Cards and Best CD Rates

Stock Market Summary For Friday, January 7, 2011

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 08:42 PM PST

The market closed with mild losses today.  Today the market had the potential of being nasty but by the close stocks recouped a significant portion of their losses with internals coming in mixed.  Earnings are upon us next week and growth comparisons are going to become a challenge as we move through 2011.  Volatility is still very low and can only increase from here which generally never bodes well for stock prices. However, we are raising the support levels and leaving the … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Credit Cards and Best CD Rates

Vicor Tech (VCRT) – Huge Support for SCD Indication

There was an interesting article in the January 4, 2011 edition of the Wall Street Journal that brings to light the significant issue of over-implantation (or perhaps under-implantation) of defibrillators.  Over-implantation can unnecessarily put patients at risk of dying on the operating table and contributes to skyrocketing health care costs (these are expensive medical devices).  Under-implantation means … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Credit Cards and Best CD Rates

Time Cost Of Gas Is Less Than Half The Cost In 1940

Posted: 07 Jan 2011 07:07 PM PST

A comment by Gale Pooley on this CD post suggested adjusting the cost of gas to account for increases in worker productivity over time, and the chart above does just that.  It shows the time cost of a gallon of gas, measured by the number of minutes of work at the average hourly manufacturing wage (BLS data here) required to purchase a gallon of gas at the nominal, retail price in each year between 1939 and 2010 (EIA data here).

It took just slightly less than 9 minutes of … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Credit Cards and Best CD Rates
