US Retail Sales Data Helps USD Extend NY Session Gains

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 07:31 AM PST

While the USD was pressured overnight, heading into today's US reports, it perked up, especially against the JPY and GBP, and the EUR as well. US retail sales were stronger than expected, and producer prices showed a jump in inflation. That helped to support the USD further against the majors. In yesterday's session and overnight, the USD had been squarely on the backfoot, as the EUR rebounded strongly following the weekend.

Gold And Silver – Now What?

Posted: 14 Dec 2010 07:22 AM PST

If you have followed my posts for a while, you have noticed that on occasion I am able to consider the longer term picture of things – gold’s C wave parabolics, silver’s potential height in December and more recently, palladium to the moon.  And I enjoy the research and consideration of the evidence to offer these longer term views of the precious metal’s bull market.

But what I am much more comfortable with is the day to day analysis of things – looking up close at a tree or two and … [visit site to read more] or compare Best Credit Cards and Best CD Rates

After an earlier bout of dollar weakness the greenback is clawing its way back sharply on Tuesday. Just 24 hours ago the opposite situation caught our eye as initial dollar strength gave way to a round of selling. Early weakness in the dollar was blamed on continued strength in global stocks and rising commodity prices symptomatic of ongoing recovery. The comments below were provided by Kevin Lane of Fusion IQ.
As seen in the chart the number of net new highs on all U.S. exchanges combined are fewer now (green circle) than when the indices made their previous highs back in early November (red circle). While this alone is not a glaring negative, it does raise some caution as a market moving higher with fewer names participating eventually is not a good condition. South African Recovery Unevenly On Track

By Cees Bruggemans, Chief Economist of FNB.
Although mid-2010 was a bit slow (3Q2010 showed as little as 2.6% growth), this was mostly due to strike action in manufacturing and the public sector (between them contributing nearly a third of economic activity).
With the strikes out of the way, manufacturers having to catch up, and the motor and retail trades not standing still, car sales motoring ahead at 30%, the 4Q2010 is likely to show faster growth.
