TODAY'S SUMMARY

Alan Johnson backs a graduate tax

08 December 2010

In the Times, Alan Johnson comes out in support of a graduate tax for the first time and argues that the coalition has unfairly distorted the system he originally introduced. Elsewhere, in the Guardian, Peter Wilby argues that far from deterring the poor, tuition fees are the only way to ensure their participation. In the Daily Telegraph, the former Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown says that Nick Clegg's achievement has been to keep his party united as a team, even if they cannot be united in the lobbies. In international politics, the Washington Post's David Ignatius writes that for all China's apparent prosperity and confidence, its leaders are preoccupied with problems of internal growth and political stability. Finally, in the Independent, Johann Hari says that the rape allegations against Julian Assange must not be allowed to obscure what WikiLeaks has told us.
