TODAY'S SUMMARY

The leaked cables could wreck diplomacy

30 November 2010

A Times editorial asserts that most people share America's concerns about global affairs as revealed in the leaked diplomatic files, and that the leak has jeopardised the trust necessary for diplomacy. But Robert Fisk of the Independent states that the leaked files demonstrate America's lack of will to solve the Israel-Palestine crisis. Ed Miliband is facing an urgent challenge to win over unconvinced members of his shadow cabinet while also presenting a likeable persona to voters, writes Mary Riddell in the Telegraph. Yossi Melman in the Independent writes that Israel is behind recent attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists, but says that covert efforts to stall Iran's nuclear programme will not dent Tehran's determination. Finally, in the Financial Times, Mohamed El-Erian warns that Ireland's bailout will not significantly improve its growth prospects because it does not relieve the country's structural debt.
