TODAY'S SUMMARY
Obama's deficit dilemma
15 November 2010
In the Financial Times, Clive Crook urges Barack Obama to lead the way on deficit reduction and accept the recommendations of a bipartisan commission. Elsewhere, in the Independent, Mary Ann Sieghart warns that the coalition's plan to reduce the number of MPs will weaken parliamentary accountability, since the number of ministers remains the same. Meanwhile, in the Guardian, Gordon Brown hails Aung San Suu Kyi's release but says there is no evidence that the junta will allow genuine democratic reform. In the Times, William Rees-Mogg looks at how the global currency crisis has renewed interest in gold's role in the modern system. Finally, in the Daily Telegraph, an editorial warns that the aims of Britain's involvement in Afghanistan remain dangerously unclear.
