Elsewhere, in the Times, the former foreign secretary, Jack Straw, argues that the EU must embrace Turkey's membership bid and says the Cyprus dispute is merely an excuse for those who cannot stomach the accession of a Muslim country. In the Independent, Mary Ann Sieghart writes that in order to appeal to US voters again, Barack Obama must abandon his cool, calculating approach and show greater empathy. Meanwhile, the Financial Times's Clive Crook sugggests that Obama and the new Republican House should begin by working together on tax reform. Finally, on Slate, Joseph Stiglitz says that the US foreclosure crisis reveals the shocking unfairness in how the law treats struggling homeowners.
