TODAY'S SUMMARY

Obama must expose his opponents or co-opt them

03 November 2010

In the Guardian,
Jonathan Freedland argues that Barack Obama must either expose his opponents as dangerous extremists or forge compromises with them on welfare and the economy. Elsewhere, in the Financial Times, Steven Rattner says that political gridlock in the US is unlikely to benefit anyone in the long run. In the Times, Anatole Kaletsky says that the eurozone crisis has enabled a great leap forward for European integration as Angela Merkel pushes for new powers. Meanwhile, in the New York Times, Thomas Friedman predicts that India will become the world's innovation hub in the next decade. Finally, in the Independent, Simon Carr says that austerity, rather than "shared history", has brought France and Britain closer together.
