In the Financial Times, Clive Crook says that Obama's biggest mistake was to worry more about consoling the whining left than keeping the centrists who voted for him in 2008 on side. Elsewhere, in the Times, Karl Rove argues that the Republicans will win because Obama over-promised and under-delivered on the economy. Meanwhile, in the Washington Post, David S Broder suggests that the nation will rally around Obama if he orchestrates a showdown with the Iranian regime. Away from US politics, and following Harriet Harman's description of Danny Alexander as a "ginger rodent", the Guardian's Jackie Ashley argues that politics needs insults to keep democracy afloat. Finally, on his Telegraph blog, Benedict Brogan writes that the latest airline bomb plot proves that the intelligence agencies need to be protected from "judicial jihad".
