TODAY'S SUMMARY

The coalition must confront the English Defence League

25 October 2010

The government must confront the violent English Defence League if it is to address the issue of national identity, writes Jon Cruddas in the Times . Elsewhere, in the Guardian, the former Liberal Democrat cabinet minister David Laws argues that the introduction of the pupil premium shows that the coalition is determined to expand opportunity for all. In the Daily Telegraph, Boris Johnson says that Britain needs to keep its nuclear arsenal, even if it's entirely dependent on the United States. But in the Financial Times, Max Hastings argues that the coalition should now consider replacing Trident at a lower level and smaller cost. Finally, in the Independent, Yasmin Alibhai-Brown says WikiLeaks' Iraq war logs prove that Bush and Blair were worse than the dictator they toppled.
