TODAY'S SUMMARY

Britain braces for spending cuts

20 October 2010

The outcome of the Comprehensive Spending Review, to be announced by the Chancellor this afternoon, dominates the comment pages this morning. Simon Heffer in the Telegraph argues that the expected cuts of £83bn are just a start and nowhere near deep enough to address the problems facing Britain, while Ha-Joon Chang in the Guardian writes that the scale of the cuts could endanger short-term recovery and weaken the economy. Daniel Finkelstein in the Times argues that no one group can be singled out for blame for the deficit - we are in this together in the sense that we all spent our way into this mess. Robert Peston for the BBC looks back to the cuts announced in yesterday's defence review and gauges their possible impact on the major defence contractor BAE Systems. Finally, John Lichfield in the Independent assesses the success of President Sarkozy's mission to change France, finding that he has frittered away his political capital and now faces serious consequences.
