TODAY'S SUMMARY

Drone attacks only perpetuate terrorism

15 October 2010

In the Independent, Johann Hari warns that the US drone attacks in Pakistan create far more jihadis than they kill and perpetuate the problem of terrorism. Meanwhile, in the Guardian, Gaby Hinsliff says that the government's quango review has confirmed that many fulfil such necessary functions that they can't be scrapped. But elsewhere, a Daily Telegraph editorial argues that the "bonfire of the quangos" didn't go far enough and calls for greater privatisation. In international politics, the Washington Post's David Ignatius says that Barack Obama and the Democrats should stop apologising and start taking credit for policies that worked. Finally, in the Times, Philip Collins argues that the government needs a new definition of poverty that focuses on what a person can do, rather than what they can buy.
