TODAY'S SUMMARY
The Lib Dems have no mandate to vote for tuition fees
14 October 2010
All the political parties have had to backtrack on opposing increased university tuition fees, says David Aaronovitch in the Times, and Ed Miliband should follow suit. In the Independent, Steve Richards argues that the Liberal Democrats do not have a mandate to vote in the fee rise because of their unequivocal opposition to it during the election. Meanwhile, writing in the Mirror, Kevin Maguire criticises the plans, saying that there is nothing fair about the free market in higher education. Elsewhere, in the Guardian, Zoe Williams asks why the plight of the Chilean miners captured the world's imagination so completely. Finally, in the New York Times, Thomas Friedman urges the US to invest in game-changing energy research.
