TODAY'S SUMMARY
Osborne's cuts are neither just nor fair
12 October 2010
George Osborne's cuts, which have left the rich unscathed, are neither just nor fair, says Mary Riddell in the Telegraph, and Labour should point this out. Over at the Times, Rachel Sylvester suggests that Ed Miliband and Alan Johnson must restore Labour's reputation for economic competence by showing that the party is willing to take tough decisions as well as oppose unpopular policies. Meanwhile, in the Independent, Steve Richards argues that the government will be unable during this parliament to achieve the promised 25 per cent spending cut. Elsewhere, in the Guardian, Polly Toynbee points out that Sir Philip Green's report into public-sector waste directly contradicts the government's decentralising ideology. Finally, in the Financial Times, Gideon Rachman discusses the Tea Party movement - a minority protest movement that could become more threatening if the US slips back into recession.
