An Independent editorial disagrees, noting that although the Conservative party conference was overshadowed by the row over child benefit, David Cameron avoided the issue in his speech. On her BBC blog, Stephanie Flanders suggests that Labour tilted the tax and benefit system towards children and low-income, single-parent families - and serious money can only be raised from the benefit system by tilting it back. Elsewhere, in the Times, David Aaronovitch argues that Education Secretary Michael Gove's insistence on traditional teaching methods shows that he is out of touch with modern schools. Finally, in Slate, Fred Kaplan discusses the possible benefits of the US military deploying solar energy equipment on the battlefields of Afghanistan.
