TODAY'S SUMMARY

Has Osborne gone too far?

05 October 2010

Responses to George Osborne's speech at the Conservative party conference yesterday dominate the comment pages. In the Times, Rachel Sylvester argues that while Cameron and Osborne agree on the need to cut spending, they disagree on why: Osborne envisions a smaller state, while Cameron prefers the "big society". Mary Riddell in the Telegraph writes that the country is not ready for Osborne's bitter medicine, feeling that Britain is ill-equipped to withstand it. Steve Richards in the Independent considers that Osborne's speech was more about politics than policy and was designed to prepare the groundwork for the "hazardous" task of reducing the deficit. Meanwhile, Oliver Letwin in the Guardian makes the case for the coalition's welfare reforms, arguing that reducing the deficit is just the first step towards a new kind of society. Finally, Paul Krugman in the New York Times condemns the new brazenness from billionaire media moguls in writing cheques for their political favourites, in particular the behaviour of Rupert Murdoch and his Fox News channel.
