TODAY'S SUMMARY

Cameron walks the high-wire

04 October 2010

In an editorial, the Independent argues that the US general terror alert on travel in Europe helps no-one and does the terrorists' job for them by creating a climate of fear . While there is little fear and loathing at this year's Conservative party conference (for a change), Simon Jenkins at the Guardian writes that David Cameron will have to walk the high-wire between upholding coalition policy and satisfying the right-wing party base. The Financial Times features an editorial giving up a little love for the much-maligned Troubled Assets Relief Programme. Peter Hitchens in the Daily Mail lambasts the press for brooding over the failure of their preferred candidate, David Miliband, for the Labour leadership. Hitchens would probably agree with Michael Pilgrim's piece in today's Times, in which he finds the bourgeois beatification of "low-level smuggler" Howard Marks a real drag.
