The Public Assistance Cycle

Posted: 21 Sep 2010 02:08 PM PDT

Even before the financial crisis struck, many people were living from paycheck to paycheck, hurt by stagnant incomes, the rising cost of essential goods and services, and widespread risk-shifting by employers.
Now that the “recovery” is well underway, a post at the Wall Street Journal’s Real-Time Economics blog, “Watching Wal-Mart at Midnight,” suggests that a growing number of Americans are having to cope with an even more depressing reality:

Why No Amount Of Fiscal Or Monetary Stimulus Will Be Enough, Given How Small A Share Of Total Income The Middle Now Receives

Posted: 21 Sep 2010 01:56 PM PDT

Fiscal policy is deadlocked. So, apparently, is monetary policy.
The Fed's decision today (Tuesday) to keep short-term interest rates near zero is no surprise. What's odd is its apparent decision not to boost the economy by buying hundreds of billions of bonds — despite its acknowledgment that "the pace of recovery in output and employment has slowed in recent months," and that prices are rising too slowly for comfort (i.e., we might be facing deflation).
Every … [visit site to read more]

The Fed Stays On Hold

Posted: 21 Sep 2010 01:35 PM PDT

As was nearly universally anticipated, the Federal Reserve kept the federal funds rate unchanged at a range between 0.0% and 0.25%. There really is no way to cut the rate further since we are already at zero. Raising rates with no evidence of inflation and the economy operating far below its potential would be, in a word: stupid.

Below I present the current policy statement and the policy statement from their last meeting on August 10th, along with my translation/commentary on a paragraph by … [visit site to read more]

California Business Exodus: If You Tax Something…

Posted: 21 Sep 2010 12:43 PM PDT

From Joseph Vranich:

“California is in serious trouble because many people refuse to admit to one of our big problems – the flight of businesses, capital and jobs to other states and nations. Businesses are shrinking their California footprint because high taxes and intense regulation damage their ability to compete.

Good information about the phenomena is hard to come by. Hence, out of frustration, a year ago I began compiling a list of what I call “California Disinvestment Events.” The new … [visit site to read more]
