TODAY'S SUMMARY

Deficit dilemmas

22 September 2010

In the Times, Anatole Kaletsky questions whether the cuts will work - and argues that there is a need for a Plan B if they don't. In the Guardian, Jonathan Rutherford and Aditya Chakrabortty see the deficit as a chance to increase, not reduce, the state's role in the economy. In an editorial, the Daily Telegraph takes the Tories to task for kow-towing to Lib Dem sensibilities on taxation. Meanwhile, David Prosser in the Independent calls on the Tories to continue Labour's policy of taxing bankers' bonuses. It's public-sector workers who take a bashing in Philip Johnston's Telegraph column, in which he calls for pay to be performance related.
