TODAY'S SUMMARY
The verdict on Clegg
21 September 2010
This morning, the papers are dominated by coverage of Nick Clegg's keynote speech at the Liberal Democrat conference yesterday. Polly Toynbee in the Guardian felt that Clegg talked "pure Cameronomics", but concluded that it would be unwise to write off the Lib Dems just yet. Alex Massie in the Spectator thought that the delivery of the speech was lacklustre and that while Clegg was trying to "play nice", parts of it were unnecessarily defensive. Steve Richards in the Independent observes that the overwhelming mood at the conference is one of nervousness, despite the Lib Dems' recent ascent to power, and writes that Clegg's tone was well-pitched to alleviate the concerns of his members. Away from the conference, Richard Kemp in the Times argues that the British presence in Afghanistan's Sangin district has made civilians in the UK safer from terrorism. Across the pond, Paul Krugman in the New York Times writes of the anger sweeping America's wealthy minority as the rhetoric of "sacrifice" is transformed into moderate tax rises for the highest earners.
