Meanwhile, Peter Hoskin in the Spectator feels that the Lib Dems have got their lines right so far, and doubts that this conference will provide a major defection from the coalition. Jeffrey Sachs in the Independent praises the development aims of the UN ahead of this week's summit in New York, but feels that to achieve these goals, we have to recognise that rich countries will always make promises they don't keep. Libby Purves in the Times argues that public-sector workers are no longer overworked and underpaid, but rather enjoy protection from market forces at the expense of the taxpayer. Finally, Wolfgang Münchau in the Financial Times suggests that the rise of anti-immigration parties in Europe highlights the decline of the continent's global influence.
