However, the excesses of the trade unions will be useful for the government, says Alex Massie in the Spectator, by helping it to win the support of Middle England. Over at the Guardian, Jackie Ashley suggests that the north-south divide is about to grow sharper, with cuts that hammer the most vulnerable areas hardest. In the Times, Rachel Sylvester says that how to balance freedom and restraint is perhaps the defining question of our age, and could yet split the coalition. Finally, in the Financial Times, Philip Stephens argues that the Labour leadership contest has suddenly become relevant, with David Miliband the only candidate who can actually win an election.
