TODAY'S SUMMARY

Is Robert Chote the right man for the OBR?

10 September 2010

In the Guardian, Simon Tisdall argues that Turkey is on a precipice; a positive result in the referendum will strengthen the rule of law, yet defeat could unsettle its economic recovery. Philip Stephens makes the case in the Independent that Europe is destined to watch from the sidelines as America and China shape a new world order (or disorder). Meanwhile, the Times argues in an editorial that the Conservatives have no need to pander to the Lib Dems on a graduate tax; anything suitably progressive for the Lib Dems will be seen as an "attack on talent". Finally, the case is made both for and against Robert Chote's appointment with the OBR. In the Independent, David Prosser says Osbourne is "neatly eliminating" a critic, while a Telegraph editorial says he is the right man for the job because of his fierce independence.
