TODAY'S SUMMARY
BP attempts to spread the blame
09 September 2010
Robert Peston for the BBC examines BP's report into the causes of the Gulf oil spill, and argues that the company must take responsibility for the actions of its contractors as well as its own employees rather than attempting to shift the blame away. In the Telegraph, Benedict Brogan takes stock of the government's past few weeks, concluding that the turbulence caused by the Andy Coulson and William Hague scandals is nothing compared with what is to come as more cuts are announced. Robert Reiner in the Guardian examines the News of the World phone-hacking allegations and considers the implications for the relationships between the media, politics and policing. Blighty in the Economist charts the demise of the social housing contractor Connaught, pointing out that its collapse is another reminder that the effects of public- and private-sector cuts are inextricably linked. Finally, Johann Hari in the Independent argues that British Catholics face a simple decision over the upcoming papal visit - either stand with the victims of abuse, or with the Pope.
