TODAY'S SUMMARY

Is Diamond right for Barclays?

08 September 2010

Tracy Corrigan in the Telegraph argues that while Bob Diamond might be amply qualified to succeed John Varley as head of Barclays, he will have to sharpen up his political skills if he is to weather the storm over his bonus habit and survive in the post long-term. Elsewhere, Kevin Maguire in the Mirror examines the real cost of the new free schools programme, and concludes that it is another policy indicative of Cameron's and Clegg's right-wing bias. Hamish McRae in the Independent writes that the tax people aren't responsible for the current confusion in the system - Gordon Brown is to blame for merging departments and overloading the resulting body with more and more complicated tasks. Martin Rees in the Financial Times finds that the proposed cuts to Britain's science budget compare unfavourably with our international competitors, which could well make Britain less attractive for investment in the future. And finally, Peter Hoskin in the Spectator unravels the latest development in the News of the World phone-hacking scandal, which finds the former home secretary Alan Johnson in the spotlight for failing to investigate the problem last year.
