Chunghwa Telecom Co. Ltd. (NYSE:CHT) declared solid financial results for the first half of 2010 with net income soaring 12.7% year over year. GDP Surprise To Have Staying Power?

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 07:05 AM PDT

Pre-market futures sprang nicely higher as the GDP data rolled across the screen. The headline showed that second quarter GDP stands at +1.6%. Yes, that is below the initial +2.4% read. But it is nicely above the Street estimate of +1.3%.

There were some other nice pieces of data below the headlines. In particular, final sales were revised higher, as was the GDP price index. That latter piece helps make the case that deflation is at bay…at least for now.

So now the key question is: Does … [visit site to read more]

Close Those Longs In The Bond Market!

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 06:47 AM PDT

The yield on the US 10-year Treasury Note sank from a high of 3.97% in April to touch 2.49% recently.

But just what is the bond market trying to tell us? My analysis indicates that more than 75% of the yield on the 10-year note can be explained by MZM velocity, calculated as the ratio between GDP (current terms) and MZM (money zero maturity). When the historical relationship is applied to the current yield on the 10-year note of 2.54% it indicates that the bond market is expecting MZM velocity … [visit site to read more]

Laugh Out Loud: Blame It On The Stupid Economy

GDP Growth – Bingo!

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 06:27 AM PDT

By Cees Bruggemans, Chief Economist of FNB.
Firstly the GDP growth slowdown in 2Q2010 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.2% as compared to 4.6% in 1Q2010 gives us 2.3% year on year GDP growth during 1H2010.
Given pedestrian growth performances and prospects in too many sectors of the economy, as highlighted earlier this week, we can probably expect only a modest growth gain in 2H2010, taking the expected overall GDP growth for 2010 to 2.5% to 3% at best.
This is well below long-run … [visit site to read more]
