A Warning From The Cyclicals

Posted: 23 Aug 2010 12:27 AM PDT

Further to my post about the bond vs. stock market conundrum, here are some further warnings from the cyclicals. The first chart shows the relative performance of the cyclically sensitive Semiconductors against Technology stocks. The Semis have been weakening on a relative basis and violated a relative support level in early August.

Looking at the relative returns of the broader Morgan Stanley Cyclical Index against the market, these cyclicals fell through a relative uptrend in early June … [visit site to read more]

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 11:51 PM PDT

Commodities – Energy
Crude Oil Steady after $10 Drop
Crude Oil (WTI) - $74.06 // $0.24 // 0.33%
Commentary: The last two weeks have been a dismal period for crude oil, as the commodity has tumbled from close to $83 to nearly $73. Prices are currently up slightly to kick off the new week, after falling in four of the last five sessions. The drivers of price action remain the same: the global economic outlook with an emphasis on the United States; and inventory levels, which are at 10-year … [visit site to read more]

Dollar and Yen Strengthen As a New Trading Week Begins
After four days in which the euro and British pound had dominated the market, the trend markedly reversed by last Thursday. Several negative economic reports from the U.S. have added to concerns regarding the global economic recovery, boosting risk aversion. Both the U.S. dollar and yen saw gains as a result. Will the dollar and the yen continue to strengthen this week as well?

Bear Of The Day: CRA International, Inc.

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 11:05 PM PDT

CRA International’s (CRA) second-quarter earnings were modestly ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate primarily owing to the uptick in utilization rate backed by successful restructuring actions.
Although litigation and management consulting related areas were reasonably active, clients cautious aggregate spending and a decline in organic revenue are expected to limit the company s growth. Overall, near-term visibility remains unclear, given the current volatile market trends.
Despite showing … [visit site to read more]

WSJ Finally Has Some Worthwhile Analysis On Gold

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 11:01 PM PDT

After the junk from Brett Arends and James Altucher, the WSJ finally has some worthwhile analysis on Gold. However, there are still many holes in this piece.

The author basically concludes that Gold is a currency and not a commodity because it has followed US Dollar movements closely. Yes, we all know that Gold and the greenback usually move in opposite directions. However, while noting Gold as a currency, the author fails to note that it is a worldwide and universal … [visit site to read more]

Getting Shafted In Other Ways

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 05:37 PM PDT

When people talk about how Washington has helped its friends on Wall Street (and elsewhere) at the expense of the little guy, the discussion usually centers on taxpayer-funded bailouts and the various liabilities taken on by the government (think AIG and Fannie Mae) that are bleeding the public coffers dry.
But that is not the only way that the masses are getting shafted. Other policies that have been described as good for the economy as a whole have had unwelcome consequences. Aside from … [visit site to read more]
