TODAY'S SUMMARY

Blair and Mandelson return to haunt Labour

31 August 2010

In the Guardian, Polly Toynbee says that David Miliband needs to find the independence to tell Tony Blair and Peter Mandelson to end their destructive interventions. Elsewhere, the Financial Times's Gideon Rachman argues that the hatred of Blair has reached absurd levels and that the New Labour years will be remembered as a period of prosperity and optimism. In international politics, the Washington Post's Anne Applebaum says that the US has paid a high price for Iraq as its reputation for effectiveness has eroded. Meanwhile, in Slate, Christopher Hitchens attacks Glenn Beck's "Restoring Honor" rally as a vague and undirected expression of white self-pity. Finally, in the Times, Hugo Rifkind explores why a fifth of Americans believe that Barack Obama is a secret Muslim.
