TODAY'S SUMMARY

Labour could become the party of the squeezed middle classes

30 August 2010

In the Independent, Mary Ann Sieghart says that it is Labour -- not the Tories or the Liberal Democrats -- that could succeed in selling itself as the party of the squeezed middle classes. Elsewhere, in the Times, William Rees-Mogg argues that the elections of 1918 and 1931 prove that the nation can rally to a coalition. In international politics, the Washington Post's David Ignatius says that helping the flood-ravaged Pakistan would be good for the American soul as as it continues to debate the "Ground Zero mosque" issue. Meanwhile in the Financial Times, Wolfgang Münchau warns that the German economy is only recovering faster this year because it contracted faster last year. Finally, in the New York Times, Nicholas Kristof says that Barack Obama needs to act now to prevent Sudan becoming the location of the world's bloodiest war in 2011.
