TODAY'S SUMMARY

Fairness can't be measured numerically, says Clegg

26 August 2010

The Institute for Fiscal Studies' (IFS) conclusion that the "emergency" Budget is "regressive", should make the Liberal Democrats think twice about which policies they back, says Larry Elliott in the Guardian. Nick Clegg, however, is steadfast, and in the Financial Times refutes the IFS analysis, because fairness can't be measured numerically - what matters is the dynamic effect of policy across generations. Meanwhile, in the Independent, Johann Hari argues that legalising drugs would swiftly and entirely bankrupt criminal gangs. Over at the Washington Post, Katrina van den Heuvel criticises the US Supreme Court's decision to allow corporations "unlimited spending in pursuit of political ends". Finally, in the Telegraph, Con Coughlin warns that the floods in Pakistan have left a country too difficult to govern that is ripe for another military coup.
