TODAY'S SUMMARY

Miliband sets out his stall

25 August 2010

In the Times, David Miliband sets out an alternative political vision to that of the coalition, arguing that Labour should tax the banks to invest in manufacturing and extend the guarantee of a job beyond the 18-24 age range. Elsewhere, in the Guardian, James Graham argues that Nick Clegg needs to find the confidence to admit to his political differences with David Cameron in public. Writing in the Independent, Christina Patterson says that the rows between George Osborne and Iain Duncan Smith suggest that Cameron's government will have to choose between spending cuts and real welfare reform. In international politics, the Washington Post's David Makovsky writes that there is good reason to believe that the Middle East peace talks will produce results on security and borders. Finally, the Economist's Blighty looks at how the Catholic Church covered up the role played by a priest in a 1972 IRA bombing.
