TODAY'S SUMMARY
The dream of social mobility has been betrayed
17 August 2010
Poor but bright young people in Britain have been betrayed, says Mary Riddell in the Telegraph. In his speech on social mobility, Nick Clegg must explain how the "big society" can be constructed on a broken dream. Over at the Guardian, Gaby Hinsliff points out that by bringing in Blairites, the coalition gives the impression of a divided Labour Party. Meanwhile, in the Times, Rachel Sylvester discusses the souring relationship between David Cameron and Boris Johnson, which could revive the emotional traumas of the Labour years. On his Telegraph blog, Con Coughlin argues that General Petraeus is right to question Obama's Afghanistan exit strategy - forces should only be withdrawn after a degree of political stability is established. Finally, in the Financial Times, Arvind Subramanian considers the paradox of India's economic dynamism.
