TODAY'S SUMMARY

Coalition prepares for new Labour leader

16 August 2010

Labour's new leader can expect immediate opposition from the coalition, says James Forsyth in the Spectator. Strategy is already being prepared, with the aim of associating the new leader with Labour's failures as quickly as possible. Elsewhere, Simon Schama in the Financial Times lauds President Obama's decision to endorse the Ground Zero mosque, saying that it reasserts the tolerance and religious freedom on which America was founded. Mary Ann Sieghart in the Independent argues that falling house prices should be celebrated, as they help to redistribute wealth back from the elderly and middle-aged to the young. Aneditorial in the Guardian warns that as Nato troops prepare to withdraw from Afghanistan, President Karzai's political compromises could do lasting damage to equality and human rights. Mohammad Mostafaei in the Times condemns "arbitrary" intelligence and security operations in Iran. A lawyer, Mostafaei is currently attempting to prevent Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani from being executed for adultery.
