TODAY'S SUMMARY

Did the coalition save the Lib Dems?

04 August 2010

Unpopularity is the price the Lib Dems must pay for being in government because the alternative was extinction, writes Daniel Finkelstein in the Times. Elsewhere, in the Daily Telegraph, Simon Heffer says that the Tory right may have to resort to ruthlessness if it wishes to prevent the coalition wrecking the constitution. In international politics, the Washington Post's Marc Thiessen argues that Barack Obama has a moral obligation to shut down WikiLeaks and prevent it from releasing more documents. Meanwhile, in the New York Times, Timothy Geithner says that Obama's fiscal stimulus has put the US economy on the road to recovery. Finally, on his BBC blog, Robert Peston urges George Osborne to be imaginative in selling Northern Rock and to ignore the allure of the fast buck.
