| How the west can influence Israel
09 August 2010
In the New York Times, Thomas Friedman says the only way to get through to Israel is to acknowledge the difficulties of the Middle East and offer constructive criticism rather than attack every Israeli action. The case of the robber Bradley Wernham, who was spared jail by a judge in favour of community service, only to reoffend, shows the stupidity of non-custodial sentences, writes Peter Hitchens in the Daily Mail.
Talk of banning strikes should be dismissed, says Margareta Pagano in the Independent. The government should be working with unions to save jobs rather than trying to crush them through draconian legislation. Meanwhile, writing in the Financial Times, John Lloyd notes that union activity is on the rise in developing countries such as Cambodia and China, while it is on the wane in the west. In the current financial climate, economists need to stop trying to predict every twist and turn in the markets and have confidence in their long-term forecasts, according to Bill Emmott in the Times.
